2017 Athlete Instructions

Dear SLO GranFondo Athletes:

Perfect fall weather on the California Central Coast is here and so is the annual SLO GranFondo! True, we have a new shortened course but an elevated experience is in store for you. We will ride an untimed 45 mile wine country tour, along side a no pressure peloton of professional cyclists, who will share their stories and high energy with us.

Your all level escorted ride will be followed by athlete recovery services, hot food, local wine and beer tasting. Then at our 90min up close and personal Pro Panel in Avila Beach we will do a deep dive into the sport of cycling and our guest professional riders worlds. Bring your ‘no holds bar’ questions and a big appetite for two wheeled pleasure with you to #EnduranceTownUSA.

This ride is a benefit for The Alpha Foundation. Thank you for supporting this worthy local non-profit and feel free to additionally donate directly to them during the event. Taper well, travel safe and contact us directly with any questions to help make your event weekend the best possible.

Thank you,

Larry & David, Athlete Customer Service Managers

Samantha Pruitt, Race SLO CEO & Founder

SLO GranFondo Rules of the Ride:

This is NOT A RACE, but rather a casual, scenic ride through the Edna Valley’s rolling country roads. THE ROADS ARE NOT CLOSED. At all times, you will need to follow 100% of the laws and rules of the roadways to ensure you and your fellow rider’s safety. You will ALL receive a MANDATORY turn sheet for you to carry with you for reference at all times listing course directions, 1 aid station location as well as critical emergency support numbers. Helmets are mandatory!

We will have three pace groups for you to ride with. Each pace group will have a ride leader and will contain some of our invited pro cyclist guests for you to ride along side. Ride leaders will all gather at the Avila Beach Pier on Front Street at sharp on . ID and waivers will be required at check in and ride start.

Fast Group: 18 mph+
Medium Group: 16 mph-17 mph
Casual: 13 mph-15 mph

NOTE: If you do not think you will finish the entire route in 3 hours (13 mph average pace), please use Tiffany Ranch Road as your ‘cutoff’ route to ensure you make it to the Pro-Panel on time (10:30am). See route sheet and route map for details. One of the group ride leaders will escort you back.

3. Our passionate, cause-oriented Professional Cyclists are also here to enjoy our beautiful Central Coast. But keep in mind, they are NOT here to race you and have been instructed by our Race Director to ride at a comfortable pace so that all the riders will be able to enjoy their conversation and energy, not just the lead pack. We ask you to self-seed by experience and average speed. If we see any riders causing safety issues at any time they will be pulled over and warned

4. Our single Aid Station is at approximately mile 27 (if you are using the ‘cutoff’ route, aid station will be at approximately mile 17) . We will have high quality CLIF Bar products, pretzels, fruit, water and FLUID Sports Drink

5.Our MECHANICAL and SAG SUPPORT will be mobile along the route during the event. If you need mechanical assistance or a ride, please stay at the aid station and request assistance or call the MECHANICAL SUPPORT or SAG WAGON number on your route turn sheet.

6. No cell phone use while on your bike. PERIOD

7. No iPod or ear bud use while on your bike. PERIOD.

8. No littering of bottles or trash while on the course. PERIOD

9. We are all only as safe as our weakest link in a peloton. Know yourself and know your limits. Know that you only control that small piece and that those all around you are unpredictable and dangerous to your safety. There will be a zero tolerance policy on any rider who jeopardizes their own safety or the safety of others PERIOD. Our RACESLO STAFF will pull over and remove riders risking their own safety or the safety of others

10. Again- the roads are NOT CLOSED. This is a ride, not a race and you must follow all the laws and rules of the roadway at all times.
