Q: What is a GranFondo?

A: GranFondos are long distance, mass-participation cycling events – NOT RACES – that have become immensely popular in Italy and are quickly gaining popularity in the United States. GranFondo races are usually 100 miles or slightly longer. Uniquely this event offers a 100 mile GranFondo (Intermediate to Advanced Riders), 62 mile MedioFondo (Intermediate to Advanced Riders) and a 25 mile PiccoloFondo (Beginner to Intermediate- family friendly).  The 100 Mile GranFondo course also features a “King and Queen of the Mountain” climbing challenge.

Q: Is the event timed?

Yes, participants will have chip-on-bib timing that records how long it takes them to complete the various courses. The timing is not for competition, but simply for the fun of timing your ride from start to finish.  The GranFondo “King and Queen of the Mountain” climb up Old Creek Road will have timing mats at the bottom and top of a 5-mile segment that will record participants’ times up the climb.

Q: What are the courses like?

A: SLO Granfondo offers three courses – 25 mile, 100 kilometer (metric century) and 100 mile. Details and maps with elevation profiles on each course can be found on our Rides page.  Riders are encouraged to review the routes and match their ability level and fitness to the appropriate ride.  The 100 mile Gran Fondo includes a 1.0 mile section of hard packed gravel road at approximately 93 miles into the route and also features a King/Queen of the Mountain 5 mile timed climb (KOM climb starts at approximately mile 51). The 100 mile and 100 kilometer courses are challenging and for intermediate to advanced riders only.

Q: What does the entry fee include?

A: Each participant receives a unique event cotton t-shirt, a hot Italian lunch courtesy of Rib Line, chip-on-bib timing, course mechanical and sag support, free drop bag and service, secure bike valet service, athlete recovery zone with washing stations and professional traffic management. Massage is available for purchase.

Q: How do I order merchandise?

A: The SLO Granfondo has custom caps and jerseys by Voler available for purchase. Event posters and stretch canvas art are also available for sale.  All 2016 merchandise features custom art.  Jerseys, caps and art can be purchased separately online in advance here on our Merchandise page. Event weekend, you can buy extra meal tickets, pro panel tickets, cycling caps and autographed posters at Packet Pickup / Late Registration.

Q: Will there be awards?

A: Yes. The first place male and female rider in each ride will receive a uniquely designed Giro Stage Winners Pink bike jersey.  The “King and Queen of the Mountain” will win the traditional polka dot KOM jersey. All winners will receive a Bob Roll autographed bottle of wine.

IMPORTANT: If you do not pick up any related participant swag or awards on race weekend, it can be mailed directly to you for a $7 shipping & handling fee post race. Please contact customerservice@raceslo.com for your request.

Q: Who are the event beneficiaries?

A: We are committed to making our local community a better place. Proceeds from each SLO Granfondo registration will support ALPHA Foundation and the Hearst Cancer Resource Center at French Hospital Medical Center, two San Luis Obispo County not-for-profit organizations. Learn more about each of these community focused organizations here.

Q: Can I get a refund?

A: No. All registrations are final and non-refundable. There are no roll overs or deferrals. No exceptions. Event takes place rain or shine. This is a fundraising event. You may transfer to another ride or to another person by going to your account on Race Roster and clicking on TRANSFER. This must be done before October 14, 2016.

Q: Is there a minimum age limit?

A: Yes – All participants should be 18* years of age or older for all rides over 25 miles. The Piccolo Fondo (25 miles) ride allows for minors registered by a legal guardian with a signed waiver ONLY. That minor must be supervised at all times on the course by the same legal guardian. Any minor unsupervised will not be allowed to start.

Q: Where do I park?

A: Event parking is located at the Avila Beach Golf Resort. Follow the Event Parking signs. Additional paid parking is available across the street from the Festivale Italiano at the public parking lot at 2nd Street and San Miguel Street in Avila Beach. The San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition will provide FREE bike valet for all participants to leave their bikes and drop bags in a secure location inside the expo so they can enjoy the Festivale. Use the RaceSLO drop bag provided with your Gear Check tag (located on the bottom of your bib number) attached for shoes and a change of clothes after the ride.

Q: Can I volunteer?

A: Yes, please! We require 250 dedicated volunteers to ensure the best athlete experience and safety. Interested in volunteering for the SLO Granfondo? Review available positions here and/or contact volunteer@raceslo.com for details.
